ActionAid-Ghana and Songtaba, both non-governmental organizations (NGOs), based in Ghana, on Sunday joined alleged witches at Kukuo witches’ camp in the Northern Region, to celebrated this year’s Mothers' Day.
As part of the celebration, the NGOs re-roofed 25 huts (homes) of some of the 137 alleged witches, which were in a deplorable state, with thatch and wooding rafters.
The witches live in the camp with their 172 children and grand children.
Madam Adwoa Kwateng Kluvitse, Country Director of ActionAid Ghana, called on Government to seek the welfare of the witches, who live with their 172 children and grand children at the camp, and to take adequate steps to eventually outlaw the sending of alleged witches to the facility .
She said ActionAid-Ghana since 2005 had been working hard to improve the living conditions of the alleged witches, and to generate public interest about their plight, particularly the violation of their rights.
The Country Director commended the youth of Kukuo for providing labour for the re-roofing of the huts, contrary to some communities where young people lead the banishment of witches.
