A trader residing at Agbogbloshie, a suburb of Accra, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra Circuit Court, after being found guilty of possessing Indian hemp, popularly known as 'wee.'
The accused person, Maureen Moses, was arrested at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle after they suspected her of carrying the illicit drug. The police also found on her a pair of scissors, two king-sized wrappers, two lighters and brown paper.
She pleaded guilty to the charge of possessing a narcotic drug without lawful authority before the court presided over by Miss Audrey Koucouvie-Tay. She was convicted on her own plea.
The prosecutor, Chief Inspector J.K. Anim, narrating the facts of the case, mentioned that on May 4, 2012, two police officers were on observation duties when they saw a lady holding a brown bag.
He said a young man, who was in the company of the police, called out to the accused person, but she surprisingly took to her heels.
According to him, the police officers, being suspicious, pursued her and had her arrested at a distance, adding that when her bag was searched they found the said items.
'She was arrested and handed over to the Kaneshie Police where she was detained. The dried leaves were forwarded to the Ghana Standard Authority,' he added.
