Nsawam, May 5, GNA – More than ten farming communities near Nsawam in the Akuapem South District of the Eastern Region have called on the District assembly to halt the activities of sand winners in the area.

The communities include, Afumkrom, Fankyerekor, Dome Faasee, Kofi Quaye, Kwabena Adaba, Ayidan, Kwaa Ayi, Maamo Domprada and Paa Anno.

Briefing the Ghana News Agency at Afumkrom on Saturday, Nana Abiah I, Mponuahene of Akyem Abuakwah Tradition, who visited the area, appealed to the authorities to deal with the unauthorised sand-winners, to halt the destruction of farms and farm lands.

Nana Mbiah said at the moment, more than 200 acres of land had been destroyed by the sand-winners and has affected over 800 farmers, who cannot cultivate their farmlands.

He said the situation is disturbing, since most farmers and market women are unable to feed their families because they have been deprived of their livelihood by the sand winners.
