TEMA GENERAL Hospital (TGH) will at last get a new mortuary to ease pressure on the facility.

A sod has been cut for the construction of a modern mortuary at the cost of GH¢800,000.

The hospital's mortuary has been choked for several years now with no place to store corpses, forcing medical officers in charge to leave them on the bare floor.

During a short ceremony at the hospital's premises, Tema Municipal Chief Executive, Kempes Ofosuware said provision of the new mortuary became necessary following a wide range of problems at TGH ranging from shortage of doctors to the run down and congested   maternity ward and mortuary.

He said the facility which would be completed within eight months would give a big boost to the hospital which serves the whole of Tema and its environs.

Also at the sod-cutting ceremony was Minister for Local Government and Rural Development, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo who said the project was dear to the heart of the people of Tema. He therefore charged the contractor to work within the set time frame adding any delays would not be accepted.

Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo said GH¢1,000 would be made available to TMA to take care of any extra cost that might be incurred during the project. 'I have adopted the hospital's accident ward and replaced all broken doors and painted the building,' said the minister also used the opportunity to present a 46 inch flat screen color TV to the ward.

Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, Greater Accra Regional Minister for his part said government appointees had no business being in government if the many problems facing the nation are not resolved. He consequently charged the TMA to do more to ensure completion of the project on time.

The contractor, Comfort Nyador of Lunona Contract Limited promised to work within the time frame but asked for light to be brought to the site to enable her and the workers work complete the project on schedule.
