The Dwantoa Hemaa (Queenmother) of Dormaa Traditional Area, Nana Akosuah Frimpomaa II is worried that the rebroadcasting of the infamous inflammatory statement by the Member of Parliament for Assin North Kennedy Agyapong can spell doom for the country.
She told a section of journalists in Accra, Saturday, that some radio stations in the hinterland have edited and are replaying the “irresponsible and reckless” statement, couched it in a suitable manner for them just to whip up ethnocentric sentiments.
She has therefore petitioned the National Media Commission (NMC) and the National Security to ensure that radio stations stop airing the potentially explosive statement, and hoped this would nip in the bud, the ethnocentric sentiments in some remotes part of the country from escalating into something else.
Before petitioning the two bodies on Saturday, the Dormaa Hemaa said what Ken Agyapong said should be taken as the usual political rhetoric, saying it was not representative of what the people of Ashanti stood for.
“If we believe the statement can cause genocide, and since it has not caused the genocide yet, we should stop playing it,” she remarked, “enough is enough”.
Nana Frimpomaa pointed out that persons who repeat what has largely been described as divisive words by Ken Agyapong, for whatever purpose, “does not have the interest of the country at heart”.
She told Myjoyonline.com that the first step for the radio and TV stations to restrain such inflammatory statements on the airwaves is by using delay broadcast.
“Delay broadcast is the best way to go for Ghana now,” she maintained.
Reaffirming that peace is as a result of justice, the Queenmother of Dormaa Traditional Area called on civil society organisations to be objective in their work and condemn any unfortunate statement or action irrespective of where it is coming from.
