Kumasi (Ash), April 27, GNA - A 31-year old self-acclaimed evangelist who attempted to snatch a baby from his mother at the Asafo Market in Kumasi is being held by the police.
Shouts for help by Agartha Asare and swift response by a security officer on duty at a nearby bank prevented the suspect, Samuel Ayema alias “Awuni” from fleeing with the baby boy.
Police Chief Superintendent David Tagoe, Zongo Divisional Commander, told the Ghana News Agency that the incident happened on Wednesday, April 25, at about 1000 hours.
Agartha had gone to the market to buy some foodstuff when all of a sudden Ayema emerged at the scene and tried to forcibly take the baby away from her.
She fiercely resisted amidst shouts for help.
C/Supt Tagoe said the security officer rushed to her rescue, and arrested Ayema who initially feigned dumbness but later began to speak.
He told the police investigators that, a lady he impregnated in Accra, refused to give the child to him and that he mistook the baby for his biological son.
The Police are investigating the case for the suspect to be arraigned on Monday, April 30.
