Loud-mouth politician and New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin North, Hon Kennedy Agyapong who has a brush with the law will be saying adieu to politics, if reports reaching The Al-Hajj is anything to go by.
Kennedy Agyapong was last Monday 16th of April arrested and charged with three counts of treason, treason felony and genocide for allegedly inciting Ashantis against Gas and Ewes and declaring war following pockets of violence that has characterized the ongoing biometric registration exercise.
The beleaguered legislator who spent three days in the cells of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) was however granted bail with two sureties by an Accra Human Rights Court Thursday, April 19th on health grounds, but the substantive charges preferred against him still stand.
His blood pressure level is reported to have gone higher than normal following his three-day incarceration.
But even before he settles down to his new found freedom, albeit temporally, the acerbic-mouth politician who is also an entrepreneur and a businessman is said to be under severe family pressure, particularly from his wife and children to quit politics if he manages to disentangle himself from the case and comes out unscathed, a source close to his family told The Al-Hajj.
“The man (Ken Agyapong) is under severe pressure to quit politics especially from his wife, children and family, and to the best of our knowledge he is seriously considering doing so any time from now”, the source disclosed on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the matter.
Though, Kennedy Agyapong's party, the NPP has publicly stated that it is solidly behind him and would never renounce the MP's membership, snippets of information reaching The Al-Hajj reveal that, some prominent gurus of the party are seriously considering his expulsion, arguing that the NPP could lose vital votes in the December polls with his continue stay in the party.
The stressed Member of Parliament who was brought back to an Accra Fast Track High Court after he was re-arrested with fresh and additional charge of terrorism by the prosecution was granted bail the second time within same day which is unprecedented in Ghana's legal history.
However, addressing NPP faithful and his sympathizers moments after his release from cells, Kennedy Agyapong denied ever calling for the elimination of Ewes and Gas, adding that he stands for truth, justice and equality for all, and has no hatred for any ethnic group in Ghana.
According to him, “four of my children are from Adidome in the Volta Region and I could not possibly have any hatred for Ewes”.
A repentant Kennedy Agyepong who initially did not spare the security services particularly the police, this time praised them and the judiciary, both institutions he said were professional in the way they handled his case.
The Assin North MP is scheduled to reappear in court on the 4th May, 2012.
