A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Evans Aggrey Darko, has condemned some chiefs of the Volta Region for their open involvement in politics.

This follows attempts by some chiefs from the region to mediate the dispute between former President Jerry Rawlings and President John Mills. According to Dr. Aggrey, the action of the chiefs is a breach of the 1992 Constitution.

Dr. Aggrey in an interview with  Citi News  said: 'Article 276 (1) says that chiefs should not be taking active part in partisan politics and perhaps seeking election into parliament, and so those who want to do that perhaps must be prepared to abdicate or might be required to abdicate and so on so they can then go and contest.'

He added: 'But that notwithstanding, those who qualify if you look at 276 (2), those who qualify to be appointed into certain public offices why not they could be appointed because we are saying that the process of nation building means all hands must be on deck.'
