APR 25, 2012 LISTEN

An Ambassador for Peace, Raphael Godlove Ahenu Jr. who is the CEO of Global Media Foundation, a human right and anti-corruption media advocacy organization has called on the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies not to amuse politicians who use spewing vitriolic words that have propensity of plunging the country into civil war, rather to deal with them ruthlessly to serve as deterrent to others.

Mr. Ahenu Jr. therefore commended the Police for dealing with the MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong over comments that are deemed as inciteful and described by many as one that could incite ethnic violence in the country.

Mr Kennedy Agyapong was arrested last week for making inflammatory comments and declaring war on Accra-based radio station, Oman FM, owned by him. He was granted bail by the Accra Fast Track High Court in the sum of GH¢200,000 with one surety to be justified.

Speaking in an interview after touring some centres of the on-going biometric registration exercise in Sunyani, Mr. Ahenu Jr. urged the Police to be fair and firm and not to worry over what supporters of politicians will do after their arrest.

He said the action of some national executives and supporters of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) who besieged the offices of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) to demand the release of beleaguered MP for Assin North, Kennedy Agyapong when he was arrested was a discredit to democracy in Ghana.

The Ambassador for Peace said what more was worrying was the destruction of state properties by some of the irritated supporters of the Party. Mr. Ahenu Jr. therefore asked the Police to ensure that those who are in the grip of the law for destroying state properties face the full rigorous of the law.

He noted that it is becoming ritual in this country that whenever a politician is arrested supporters of that party besiege Police Office, saying this attitude does not augur well for the advancement of the Ghana's democracy and rule of law.

The CEO further asked security to deal ruthlessly with individuals or groups who intend to disrupt the current peace and security that the nation is enjoying.

Touching on the on-going registration, Mr. Ahenu Jr. expressed satisfaction about the peaceful nature of the exercise in the Sunyani Municipality and commended the Political Parties for cooperating with the Registration Officers to ensure smooth registration.
