Tema, April 18, GNA - The Tema Police Regional Command has arrested a 57-year-old welder, and a 34-year-old taxi driver, for allegedly conspiring to rob two women of their possessions on the Tema Motorway on Monday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Maxwell Atingane, Tema Regional Police Commander, told journalists at Tema on Wednesday that the suspects, Akpatsu Mamunye, the welder, and Michael Agyepong, the taxi driver, were arrested by the Police Night Highway Patrol Team at about 2100 hours.
DCOP Atingane stated that the complainants, Madam Cynthia Morker and Madam Rose Mary Attu, hired a Kia Spectra taxi car being driven by Agyepong from Odorkor in Accra, to Bodada near Jasikan in the Volta Region for two days.
After staying in the village with Agyepong for two days, the victims and the driver set off for Accra on Monday.
On reaching Tema at about 2045 hours, Madam Morker advised her sister and the driver to ease themselves before joining the Motorway which the driver did not oblige to.
About 100 metres to the Motorway, the driver suddenly stopped and three men wielding cutlasses emerged from a near-by bush, demanded the monies on them, robbed them and fled into the bush.
The robbers took from them ,500, GHC 1,300, I-pad computer, I-phone, clothing and other personal effects, including an Australian driving license and visa card, belonging to Madam Attu.
He said the Highway Patrol Team arrived at the scene, chased them in the bush, and arrested Mamunye who was then wearing a black mask.
The Regional Commander said the Police arrested the driver, because he was suspected to have conspired with the robbers to commit the crime, since he was aware that the victims had money and other properties on them.
He said the suspects would be arraigned before court for prosecution after the Police had completed their investigations into the matter.
DCOP Atingane advised the public to be security conscious on the road, especially on the Motorway, and to also check the background of taxi drivers they hire for long distance journeys.
