Kotoko asserted themselves as Ghana's current prime football power when they overcame rivals Hearts of Oak 2-1 before a near sell-out crowd at the Baba Yara Stadium Sunday to extend their lead on the Glo Premier league to a massive 12 points with six matches to go.
Two dramatic late goals, one from each end, marked a significant epoch in this temper-filled encounter, which saw Hearts play with ten men for the last 43 minutes.
Kotoko found the opener on the 35th minute. Michael Akuffo swung in a corner kick and Kofi Nti Boakye rose to nod in. The stadium rose to its feet with cacophonous noise vibrating though the main bowl.
Just two minutes from restart, disaster struck Hearts of Oak as Laryea Kingston who had been a peripheral performer was shown a direct red card by referee Solomon Mordey, for a foul on Baba Abdul Rahman.
Kotoko were coasting to a lone goal victory when substitute Mahatma Otoo, caught Burkinabe keeper Soulama Abdoulaye pants down with a stunning freekick from the edge of the area on the 90th minute, the ball kissing the post before rolling into the net.
But, Michael Akuffo’s sublime strike from 35 yards out three minutes into added time, carried the day for his side.
