Accra, April 16, GNA – The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for final year Junior High Schools (JHS) pupils started across the country on Monday.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has designated 1,339 centres for the examination with 1,339 supervisors and 13,212 invigilators.

Statistics made available to the GNA by the West African Examination Council, show that 376,859 JHS pupils have been registered to write the 2012 BECE from Monday, April 16th to Friday, April 20th.

The statistics indicates that 203,394 are males and 173,465 are females.

Ashanti Region registered the highest number of 77,222 candidates while Upper West Region, registered the lowest number of 10,057, Greater Accra Region 66,964, Central Region 39,216, Western Region 38,646 and Eastern Region 38,068.

The rest are Brong-Ahafo Region34, 994, Volta Region 27,506, Northern Region 28,152 and Upper East Region16, 080.
