SEVENTY SEVEN babies were delivered during the Easter festivities at three health facilities in the Central region.

A total of 63 deliveries, made up of 24 boys and 39 girls were recorded at the Winneba Government Hospital and Kasoa Health Centre while 14 were delivered at the Elmina Health Centre.

The Midwifery Officer in-charge at the Winneba Government Hospital Maternity Ward, Elizabeth Ogoe told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Easter Sunday that five boys and eight girls were born on Good Friday while three boys and three girls were delivered on Holy Saturday.

She said so far a boy and two girls have been born on Easter Sunday.

According to her, the babies and their mothers are in good   health and most of them have been discharged.

Esther Quaison, Senior Midwifery Officer at the Kasoa Health Centre said three boys and seven girls were born on Good Friday while six boys and 15 girls were delivered on Holy Saturday.

She said six boys and four girls were born on Easter Sunday morning.

The Elmina Health Centre also recorded 14 deliveries during the Easter celebrations.

On Easter Sunday, eight babies made up of three males and five females were delivered, the highest number of births recorded during the Easter in the area.

Bridget Kwame, the midwife in charge of the centre said this in an interview with the GNA in Elmina on Monday.

She said on Good Friday two girls and a boy were delivered, while two boys and a girl were also delivered on Holy Saturday.

She said all the deliveries which occurred between midnight and 0700 hours were normal and that the first delivery on Easter Sunday occurred at 0205 hours.

Mrs. Kwame said despite the successful deliveries recorded at the center its maternity unit was inadequately resourced to manage the high number of maternity cases they receive.

According to her, she was the only midwife at the centre and had to provide ante natal services as well as attend to labour cases. This she pointed out was hectic for her and appealed to the regional health directorate to post more personnel to the maternity unit.
