First Lady invites all to share in education development

Pramso (Ash), March 30, GNA – The First Lady, Mrs Ernestina Naadu Mills, has called on Ghanaians to share in the responsibility of developing the country's education.

This, she said, was necessary because of its critical importance to socio-economic progress.

She said the acquisition and application of knowledge and skills in solving problems in the society remained an essential aspect of the agenda to raise the living standards of the people.

Mrs Naadu Mills was speaking at the formal inauguration and maiden matriculation ceremony of the Saint Michael's Midwifery Training School at Pramso in the Bosomtwe District.

“Achieving millennium goals four and five, the role of Saint Michael's Midwifery Training School,” was the theme.

A total of 87 students were officially admitted to start a two-year basic certificate programme in midwifery.

The First Lady said human resource development could not be glossed over since Ghana's human development indicators in areas of education and skills acquisition, health, employment and poverty reduction remained relatively high.

She gave high marks to the Catholic Church for its immense contribution to health care delivery, noting that, the Pramso facility could not have come at a better time given the high incidence of maternal and child mortality.

The 2010 World Health Organisation report estimates Ghana's maternal mortality at 560 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Mrs Naadu Mills said every effort would be made to bring down the maternal deaths.

District hospitals and health centres are being equipped to handle obstetric emergencies. Added to this, is supplementary feeding for malnourished children and upgrading the skills of traditional birth attendants.

Mrs Joyce Assan, Principal of the School, advised the students to concentrate on their studies to enhance their career development.
