For anybody who might not know the history of Dr. Kwabena Adjei, NDC Chairman, the man is a strong Nkrumaist and would still have been except for his strong conviction that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah was betrayed.

The soft – spoken Chairman of the ruling NDC said the tenacity of Nkrumah and his socialist ideals won him over as a young man growing up.

He pointed out that “he wasn't the murderer they thought he was, he wasn't the person taking the money away from us, he was the one who was building this country; the Ghana Educational Trust Institution's free compulsory education, free education at training college levels where I benefitted. And I thought that his appointees, ministers and people near him at that time when I was a small boy had betrayed him and I didn't want to work with them”.

Dr. Kwabena Adjei was speaking on personality Friday on pm:EXPRESS, a current affairs program on the Joy News Television on Multi TV.

Due to his conviction at the time, he crossed carpets for the first time and joined the Popular Front Party, headed by Dr. Busia.

According to him, Busia's book “True Democracy for Africa” convinced him that he was a democrat and therefore made the switch easy.

Unfortunately, he quit just after 10months because as he puts it “I wanted change and they did not want change. They were not open to ideas. You know I come from the Volta Region and I don't think that they gave me the respect that they should give a Ghanaian. So I felt I did not belong”.

Explaining how he got to be a member of the NDC, the psychologist told host Esi Arhin it was through a job offer by then PNDC Chairman Jerry John Rawlings as a Deputy General Secretary of the PNDC in the Volta Region.

He contended “When JJ came, he brought people from different ideological backgrounds but with the mindset that Ghana has to be moved forward and people see development in their lifetime. Gradually those on the left associated with the right to form a concept birthing the NDC and producing the stability and democracy we have now”.

A one - time taxi driver, the NDC Chairman started his career as a university lecturer at the University of Ghana and has taught great personalities like Prisons Service Boss Kofi Bansah
