Accra, Feb 28, GNA - Government has been asked to ensure that the Electoral Commission (EC) and stakeholders give unemployed graduates the opportunity to undertake the upcoming biometric registration next month.
The call was made by unemployed Graduates Association of Ghana (UGAG) on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Spokesperson of UGAG, Justice Kojo Antwi.
It said the national exercise would eventually create jobs for the jobless graduates from the universities, polytechnics and other tertiary institutions.
The statement said the nationwide exercise was legitimate, considering the rate of graduate unemployment, which had forced the "over 65,000 graduates to move from office to office in search of jobs".
The release was in response to recent concerns about the EC bid to employ teachers to undertake the exercise.
The Ghana Education Service has however, said teachers would not be used for the biometric exercise.
“The Electoral Commission must appreciate the fact that taking teachers out of the classroom for this exercise will only disadvantage pupils and students in the various schools which we believe the Ghana Education Service will not entertain”, the statement said.
It reiterated the plight of graduates in the country and, said UGAG was a non-political interest group and best qualified for the exercise.
“In the meantime, we would keep our hopes alive whilst we wait patiently for the Electoral Commission for the call to a national duty”, the statement said.
