Kintampo (B/A), Feb. 28, GNA – Dr. Emmanuel Teye- Adjase, Director, College of Health - Kintampo Project, has called on media practitioners to specialize in mental health reportage.
Dr Teye-Adjase made the call on Friday at the close of a four-day evaluation meeting held at Kintampo, attended by medical personnel, nurses and para-medical staff of the College.
He said the project is meant to target issues affecting mental health and expressed the need for the passage of the mental health bill currently before Parliament.
Dr. Teye-Adjase said the Kintampo Project, started within the Kintampo College of Health in the year 2007, to scale up the community mental health workforce and to provide career
opportunities for medical assistants and community health officers to help workforce retention.
He said the 800 medical assistants, who were deployed last year to various regions and districts, were inadequate and that there was the need for the country to have more professionals in that capacity.
Dr. Akwasi Osei, Chief Psychiatrist of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), said the bill if passed would be extended to all hospitals to equip the institutions with more personnel.
He said the passing of the bill by Parliament would help eradicate the stigma and trauma that the mentally deranged go through.
Dr. Kofi Awoonor Williams, Upper East Regional Director of Health, called for a national law for individual citizens to go for mental medical checkup periodically.
