The Ghanaian musical scene has expanded to a great diversified number
of genres over the years. From the days of "borga music", "highlife",
"hiplife" and the likes, we have slowly arrived at the era dominated
by Azonto, a genre of music and dance threatening to take over from
football and cocoa as the nation's premier trademark.
The Azonto has given rise to a number of opportunists wishing to ride
on its domineering effects, sample random beats and throw in
ill-versed lyrics and claim to have made the next biggest Azonto
hitsong. It is in the light of such adverse conditions, that a young
talented artist rises with Hiphop, a genre less promoted by the music
promoters and disk jockeys of the country. Notwithstanding his hiphop
inclination however, the artist released a hit single, "Do The Azonto"
which took over the youth by storm and cemented his diversity as an
entertainer.
C-Real born Cyril-Alex Gockel, made his musical breakthrough upon
winning the highly coveted, Channel O/Sprite Emcee Africa Competition
in his home country and placing 2nd within the whole continent.
Staying on track of the popularity he gained through this continental
exposure, the hot hiphop artist, kept his verses "real" lacing them
with "punches" and metaphors.
One would wonder what such talent would be doing undertaking an MBA in
Marketing at the nation's premier university, University Of Ghana. But
as the artist himself puts it "talent is never enough".
“There are aThus I'm not surprised that he also runslot of things I intend to achieve in my life and music is just a small
part of that. I need to be in the best possible position I can be as a
man. Not just as a musician”.
his own recording studio Mixdown Studios.
Currently the artist is working on his debut album, "EmCEO", bound to
set the Hiphop scene on fire in the country. 'I Be The Swag', the
first single of this album was released somewhere early last year and
the track did what it was supposed to do, send a warning shot and
prepare the ground for the entry of an artist who would rise to be
known as the Hiphop General in the country.
The album according to the artist features some of the best in
Ghanaian musicians including Efya, Chase, D-cryme, E.L, J Town as well
as the Nigerian sensation, E-Fine. The release date is yet to be
announced but it is assured that the release will be sooner than
later. The album is going to have at least 4 singles and not less
than 5 videos to support it; so it's something I believe, the fans
should look forward to and enjoy throughout the year.
The three singles of this album, "I Be The Swag", "Mission Possible" a
poetic piece exhibiting the skills of my personal mentor and acclaimed
Ghanaian poet and master wordsmith, Yom Nfojoh, and "Do The Azonto"
feat EL and prior mixtapes of the artist, "Multiples Of C" and
"Project Hiphop" (with EL), can be found on his website
C-Real is one of Ghana's hottest Hiphop artistes; if not the hottest!
Meeting him and having the opportunity to interact with an artiste as
unique and determined as this only shows signs of promise for the
Ghanaian Hiphop legend in the making.
I'm informed there would be another single released soon and honestly
I don't know what to expect. C-real has my minds racing in different
directions as he doesn't hesitate to embrace new styles and challenge
his talent beyond its boundaries.
