Parents asked not to restrict physically challenged children

Nkoranza, Feb 18, GNA – Madam Philipa Banson, Nkoranza South District Director of Education, on Friday asked parents of physically challenged children not to restrict the children at home and deny them education. She gave the advice when she accompanied staff and inmates of Shalom Special School for Mentally Handicapped Children at Nkoranza to visit Mr Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, District Chief Executive (DCE), at his residence.

Madam Banson commended the staff of the school for their dedication to mentally handicapped children. Mr Agyekum said the Assembly had decided to re-locate the school and provide it with more accommodation to enable it to admit more children and staff.

The DCE commended the children for their handiness as they played drums, sang and danced, as expressed themselves in Twi and the English language. He asked parents of such children to enroll them in physically challenged schools “so that they will become useful in society, since it is only the dead who are useless”.

Mr Agyekum donated a football and a set of jerseys to the school, to encourage the inmates to take part in sporting activities. Mr Godfrey Youpor, headmaster of the school, thanked the DCE for his warm reception, and said the visit was formed part of the school's training, aimed at introducing the children to the community.
