Accra, Feb. 16, GNA - An eight-member Ugandan delegation led by Ms Evelyn Anite, Member of Parliament for Youth of Northern Uganda, has arrived in Accra on a five-day study tour of operations of the Ghana National Service Scheme (GNSS).
Mr Vincent Senam Kuagbenu, Executive Director of the Scheme, briefing the delegation on the general operations of the Scheme, said it had chalked successes over the years.
These are contained in a statement signed by Mr Ambrose Entsiwah Junior, Head of Public Relations, GNSS, copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Thursday.
It said the GNSS had ventured into modernised agricultural projects, in fulfillment of its mandate and objective to provide skills to the youth in food production.
The statement said “Mr Kuagbenu explained that this had been made possible as a result of the Government's commitment to youth work and the political will to engage the youth in productive venture.”
The Executive Director asked the delegation to acquire experiences through their study tour in Ghana, and lobby the Parliament of Uganda to commit the Government to attach importance to youth volunteering.
The delegation paid a courtesy call on the Acting Minister of Education, Mr E. T. Mensah,
He said the youth of Ghana had been involved in the development of the country at every stage of its history right from independence.
Mr Mensah recounted the days when students of Ghana made a lot of sacrifices, volunteered services and help in carting tonnes of locked-up cocoa from the hinterlands.
He asked the delegation, made up mainly of youth, to encourage their colleagues in their country to be committed to youth volunteerism.
On behalf of the delegation, Mr Samuel Kavuma, Chairperson of Uganda National Youth Council, thanked Mr Mensah for the warm reception, and assured their host of putting into practice what they would learn in Ghana.
As part of the tour, the delegation would be been taken through a day's workshop to be facilitated by Mr Kuagbenu, Mr Charles Y. Aheto-Tsegah, Deputy Director-General of Ghana Education Service; Madam Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, National Co-ordinator of National Youth Authority; Reverend George Gado, Projects Director of the GNSS, and Mrs Kafui Mills Odoi, VSO Programme Manager of National Voluntary Programme in Ghana.
The delegation that is to return to Uganda on Thursday, would also visit the GNSS demonstration farm at Papao, near Hatso, in Accra, and some selected schools where National Voluntary Service Persons are teaching.
