GTUC calls off labour meetings

Accra, Feb. 6, GNA – The Ghana Trades Union Congress (GTUC) on Monday said the intended labour meetings scheduled for Tuesday, February 7, 2012 have been called off.

In addition, the planned mass protests scheduled for Thursday, February 9, 2012 have also been called off.

A statement issued by Mr Kofi Asamoah, Secretary General of GTUC in Accra, said "Following a 20 per cent reduction of the recent increment in prices of petrol, diesel and LPG, as contained in the communiqué issued jointly by the GTUC and Government, the Steering Committee of the GTUC, at its emergency meeting held on Monday February 6, 2012 has taken these decisions".

The statement said the GTUC would continue to pursue negotiations for the 2012 National Daily Minimum Wage and the review of the Single Spine Salary Structure, as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the high cost of living on workers and their families.

"The leadership of GTUC would like to thank all workers for their support in this struggle against the removal of subsidies on petroleum products," it added.

"The leadership of GTUC would like to assure all workers that it will continue to do whatever it takes to protect the interests of workers and the general public poor and vulnerable in society."
