Accra, Feb. 2, GNA - The Ministry of Water Resource, Works and Housing (MWRWH) has presented 31 flat screen computers to the Mfantsipim Senior High School (SHS) towards their performance at the Junior Water Prize Programme (JWPP).

Dr Mustapha Ahmed, out-going Deputy Minister of WRWH, who presented the items in Accra said the computers were donated by the Xylem Watermark formerly ITT Corporation, USA, the global sponsors of the JWPP through the facilitation of the Ministry.

For the past 15 years, the International Stockholm Junior Water Prize had provided an opportunity for the brightest young minds in science to begin their journey as the next generation of leaders in the water sector.

Beyond the competition, students form an inspiring network of friends from all corners of the globe to learn and share ideas and experiences.

Since 2008, Ghana has been part of the competition and in 2010 four students from Mfantsipim SHS won the national competition.

Their project was about community awareness programme on sanitation in the Open community and the building of a simple filtration plant.

Dr Ahmed noted that Xylem Water had expressed interest in supporting the boys to implement their project in collaboration with the winners of the 2010 Netherlands Junior water prize.

“This project is almost complete and will soon be (inaugurated),” adding that the computers forms part of the continued promised by the ITT corporation.

Dr Ahmed encouraged heads of SHS to provide the needed support to enable their students to take part in the competition.

Receiving the computers, Mr. Stephen Arthur Assistant Headmaster of Mfantsipim School thanked the minister and the donors for their kind gesture.
