Health Ridge Hospital gets a second theatre for delivery

Accra, Jan.31, GNA – The Focus Region Health Project (FRHP), in collaboration with the International Women's Club, has provided equipment worth US0, 000 to the Accra Ridge Hospital and renovated the facility's maternity theater.

The equipment provided by the FRHP include a multipurpose operating table, operating lights, two recovery beds, four cabinets, three trolleys, electrosurgical equipment and Anaestasia machines.

Mr David O'Brien, Chief of Party of FRHP, said the initiative was to assist the hospital have its own multipurpose maternity theater that would provide quick health care to pregnant women.

He explained that FRHP was concerned about issues relating to maternal health and had provided training and equipment to various health facilities across the country.

Mr O'Brien said due to the increasing number of maternal cases in the hospital it was necessary for the hospital to have a separate theatre for maternal cases in order to reduce maternal mobility.

He said the Project would continue to support and provide equipment and facilities to health centres to improve health care in the country.

Dr Emmanuel Srofenyoh, Director of Clinical Service at the Ridge Hospital, said the hospital have since 2005 recorded a massive increase in maternal health cases , and it was necessary to have a maternity theater to reduce the pressure on the main theater of the hospital.

He said the gesture would help the hospital reduce delays in the management of pregnancy and its complications adding, it would also help reduce maternal mortality and morbidity to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals 5 and 6.

Mrs Florence Frempong, Member of the Projects Team of the International Women's Club, said the actual renovation of the theater started in April 2010 with funding from various organizations and individuals and was pleased to be associated with equipping the theatre to reduce maternal mortality.

USAID Ghana on Tuesday presented some theatre equipment to the Ridge Hospital.

Mr David O'Brien of Focus Region Health Project presented the items to the Medical Director in charge of the Ridge Hospital, Dr Obeng Apori.
