As Prophetic Power Choir wins Choral competition

The Ghana Tourism Authority in collaboration with Ministry of Tourism, as well as the Chieftaincy and Cultural Ministry has made giant stride in promoting and sustaining African choral music, after organising an impressive competition in the Central Region to select one choral group to represent the region at the national level.

The venue was at the Central Regional National Cultural Centre where six choral groups gathered to compete for the various prizes at stake last Friday. It was an impressive competition which was hotly contested by the contesting groups who exhibited talents in choral music, especially patriotic songs composed by Dr Ephraim Amo and J.H. Nketiah.

Each group had 15 minutes to sing five choral songs. At the end of it all Prophetic Power Choir put up excellent performance to win the ultimate prize of GH¢1,000.00 0 – and they are expected to represent the region at the national level. The group had 80.6 points while Mass Demonstration Choir garnered 80.3 to win the second prize of GH¢500.00.

The Cape Coast Youth Choir got 79.9 points to win the third prize of GH¢250.00 with St John The Divine Anglican Choir clinching the fourth place with 78.7 points. Ajumako District Youth Choir annexed the fifth position with 78.3 points with  Metapoly Choir coming last with 67 points.

The music conductor of the Ajumako District Youth Choir, who is physically challenged, was the toast of crowd as his dexterity in conducting his group was so nice that the judges and the audience could not hide their appreciation, as they applauded him.

Mr. T.K. Ansah, a senior lecturer at the Music Department at the University of Cape Coast, who announced the results, commended the competitors for putting up a spirited performance and urged them to keep it up.

The whole atmosphere was charged with dancing and singing when Mfantsipim School Choir was asked to entertain the audience, while the judges compiled the results.

The 'Azonto Dance' became prominent among the youth who could not withstand the sweet songs churned out by the Mfantsipim Boys.

Earlier, Mr. Alex Boakye, Central Regional Tourism Director said the competition was being organised to promote choral music in Africa as well as showcasing African heritage to the outside world.

He said African Choral music has been identified as one of the effective tools to promote tourism, adding that three best choral groups would be selected at the national level to compete with their counterparts from the USA, South Korea, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

A Special Event Officer at the Tourism Authority, Mr. Ben Anane Nsiah observed that choral music has future in Ghana, taking into consideration, spirited performance put by the groups.

He said the Tourism Authority and its collaborators have identified the choral music as potential tool for tourism development and they are poised to stimulate it and sustain it as well.
