The Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Ms Samia Nkrumah, has described the reported number of defections from the party to the newly formed Progressive People’s Party (PPP) as exaggerated.

According to her less than 10 per cent of members of the CPP had resigned and defected to the PPP and not the numbers that were being quoted in sections of the media.

Flagbearer of the CPP in the 2008 elections, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom, broke away from the CPP to form a yet to be registered political party, the PPP to lead it into this year’s general elections.

Since the formation of the PPP, the CPP has been hit with defections by its members who have announced their decision to join Dr Nduom’s new political movement.

The CPP have interdicted some of its executive members in connection with their flirtation with the PPP. They are the National Women’s Organiser, Ms Mary Ankamah, the National Youth Organiser, Mr Mutala Ahmed, Ashanti Regional Chairman, Nana Kofi and the Northern Regional Youth Organiser, Alhaji Kwame Mutala.

But Ms Nkrumah who is unfazed by the defections told the Graphic in Accra that the focus of the national executive was to reform the CPP and make it a viable alternative to the electorate ahead of the December polls.

She said the CPP was focused on rebuilding its structures and that steps were being taken to replace the interdicted officers.

The National Chairperson said the party had put the brouhaha of Dr Ndiuom's resignation behind and was now concentrating on re-building the party.

“Our pre-occupation now is to rebuild our party and keep it united and present Ghanaians a good political message for the 2012 elections,” Ms Nkrumah stressed.
