Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, the leader of the Progressive Movement joined the chiefs and people of Winneba to celebrate this year's MASQUEFEST. MASQUEFEST is a Fancy Dress Festival or masquerade festival held on the first day of January every year by the people of Winneba in the Central region of Ghana. This year's festival was very colourful and it featured brass band music and brought together large crowds from all over the country.

At the festival were four fancy-dressing groups who participated in the festival competition, wearing masks and accompanied by brass band music. The festival started with street dancing through the principal streets of Winneba.

The groups later converged at the Advanced Teacher Training College Park where the competition took the form of a march past and three different dances were performed by the groups. A team of judges awarded marks and the most versatile group was crowned the winner.

Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom who was a special guest of honour received a thunderous round of applause from the people when he arrived at the festival grounds with his entourage. There were shouts of 'Edwumawura' from the people as he took his seat at the dais.

In an address, Dr Nduom acknowledged the rich culture of the Effutu people and wished them well in the years to come. Dr Nduom later made a cash donation of Ghc 500 to each of the four groups and also gave Ghc 200 to the Federation. Earlier, Nana Ofori Owusu, an aspiring Parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the Progressive Movement for the Effutu Constituency had also donated an amount of Ghc 500 to each of the four groups at a special meeting with the leaders of the fancy-dressing groups.

Present at the festival were the Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Hon. Mike Hammer, The Queen mother, Effutu Municipal Chief Executive, Presiding member for the Effutu Municipal Assembly as well as citizens from Winneba both far and near.
