Stakeholders asked to support crusade against indiscipline among students

Winneba (C/R) Nov. GNA-The Deputy Minister of Pre-Tertiary Education, Mrs Elizabeth Amoah-Tetteh has emphasised the need for stakeholders in education to support the crusade against indiscipline among students.

She said parents especially, should assist school authorities to inculcate discipline in their children for them to become useful future citizens.

Mrs Amoah-Tetteh made the call at the 62nd speech and Prize-giving Day celebration of Winneba Senior High School in Winneba at the weekend on the theme: “62 years of quality education: the way forward.”

The Deputy Minister said it is expected that Senior High School education should provide holistic academic standards that prepares the youth in many ways towards nation building.

She said teachers must be diligent in their career and maintain high level of discipline in school.

Mrs Amoah-Tetteh said the local communities must compliment the efforts of government in the provision of infrastructure and other amenities to the educational facilities.

Mrs Cecilia Kwakye-Cofie Headmistress of the school said the facility, which started with 21 students in 1949 now has a student population of 1,600.

She said the school's performance for the past six year in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination has been tremendous, adding that there were passes in 6-8 subjects representing 98 per cent with a number of A's and B's grades in 2011.

The Headmistress said the school placed 8th among the 890 schools that participated in the worldwide International Poetry Award Competition held at the University of Trieste in Italy last year.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr Mike Hammah said the provision of quality education should not be the sole responsibility of the government, but rather a collective responsibility of the people.

Mr Hammah, who is also the Member of Parliament for Effutu, advised the youth to stop indulging in moral activities like Internet fraud.

Mr Teete Owusu-Nortey Chief Executive of Yetron Services Limited, an old boy of the school, who chaired the programme, said human resource development and capacity building are important for socio-economic development.

Awards were presented to deserving students and other personalities for their contribution towards the growth of the school.
