Educational policies must transcend political ideologies

Mampong (Ash), Nov. 10, GNA – The acting Chairperson of the Council of the University of Education, Winneba, Dr Ruby Selenu Avotri, has underlined the need to insulate the education system from partisan politics.

She said there should be some consistency" we should avoid the situation where education policy keeps changing, depending on which political party is in power.

She blamed the current difficulty with classroom space and dormitories in Senior High Schools (SHS) on the change from the three-year duration to four.

According to her, it was important to maintain a stable educational structure to promote quality education delivery.

Dr Avotri was addressing the seventh congregation of the Asante-Mampong College of Agriculture Education of the University of Education, Winneba.

In all, 726 graduated and were awarded Bachelor's and Post Graduate degrees and Diploma Certificates in Education.

She advised teachers to keep updating their skills and competencies to enhance their competitiveness on the job market.

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Akwasi Asabere-Ameyaw, announced that the College's Department of Science Education has entered into agreement with the University of Egerton, Kenya, Obafemi Awolowo in Nigeria and the University of Khartoum, Sudan, on a joint project to reduce poverty among farmers in the diary sector”

This has been dubbed, “Value chain for poverty reduction in the dairy sector”, and he said it involved “problem based learning in higher education.”

Prof Asabere-Ameyaw reiterated their commitment to the job of training the man-power to meet the nation's educational needs.

He appealed to the Government to provide them with the necessary infrastructure and equipment to effectively train quality teachers who would be functional in a fast growing and changing world.
