Opinion polls don’t win elections-Kweku Baaku

The Managing Editor of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baaku has said opinion polls conducted by various research groups will not win elections for politicians if politicians don't work hard to convince the Ghanaian voter.

“Polls don't win elections and I will be surprised any politician will want to capitalize on polls conducted into thinking that they will win”, he stated.

Readers may recall that the September polls by Global Market Researchers, Synovate, have placed opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo ahead of president John Mills if elections were conducted today.

The polls revealed that the New Patriotic Party flag-bearer Nana Akufo-Addo would obtain 48 percent of total votes cast with president Mills trailing him with 41 percent if elections were conducted today. The polls also put Dr. Paa Kwesi Nduom who was flag-bearer of the CPP in the 2008 elections at 5 per cent and Dr. Edward Mahama of the PNC at one percent. A sample size of 1,723 registered voters selected randomly from across the country was used.

But speaking on Joy FM's current affairs programme, “News File”, Kweku Baaku said opinion polls should serve as guide to politicians to find out where their strengths are as well as their weaknesses but should not be taken to mean the true reflection on the ground.

According to him, though he will not accept wholly the opinion polls by Synovate, it was clear however that Nana Addo for the past two years has stayed focused and competitive. He said “Akuffo Addo is a leading entity well composed” and ready for the 2012 elections.

Felix Ofosu Kwakye, a youth activist of the ruling NDC, also a panel member of the show said he wasn't surprised with the outcome of the opinion polls by Synovate as the NPP is noted for collaborating with pollsters to skew polls in their favour.

He said unlike the NPP, the NDC doesn't believe in the politics of complacency and will work hard for the electorates to retain the party in power.

According to him, “the most credible polls will be conducted on election's day” as opinion polls are not the true reflections of what is on the ground.
