Sack National Security Heads - AFAG

The Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG), a pressure group, has called on President Mills to remove the heads of the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI), National Security, the Attorney General, the National Security Advisor to the President and the Minister for the Interior.

The group argued that the leaders of those state security institutions had consistently exhibited gross disrespect for the laws and institutions of the land and had proven to be unable to perform their duties of protecting the citizenry

A statement jointly signed by leading members of AFAG, Messrs Kwabena Bomfeh, Abu Ramadan, Arnold Boateng and Opoku Davis said the alliance had followed closely the security situation in the country with alarm.

It mentioned the ongoing stand-off between the police and the BNI at the Osu Circuit Court, and said it undermined the authority of the Circuit Court and attempted to intimidate the judiciary.

'AFAG would want to draw the attention of the government and stakeholders, most importantly donor partners to consider ways of restoring confidence and hope in the security forces among the people of Ghana considering the major elections in 2012', it said.

The statement said under President Mills’ Administration, it seemed that the BNI and the National Security apparatus have become subjects to their own laws and not the laws of the state.

'The national security has now become the tool of the NDC government instead of concentrating on their core duties as national institution'. The statement added.

Most alarming is the silence of the Minister for the Interior on this particular Osu Circuit court and many others in the past, especially their inaction during the violence at the Akwatia by-elections, searching for a dog at the house of Mr Alfred Obgame, Editor of Gye Nyame Concord newspaper and seeking to arrest party activists in the Ashanti Region.

AFAG therefore calls for his immediate dismissal by the President and necessary actions taken to restore the broken down security situation in the country.
