The issue of who gets into the new national executive of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) became a little clearer by 3.00pm last Tuesday, May 31 when the time for submission of nomination forms by aspirants to the various positions elapsed.

As usual, most of the buzz has been about the presidency and four personalities returned their forms to contest for that office. They are Gyedu Blay Ambolley, James Kweku Tufuor, known widely as Nana Tuffuor, Willi Roi and Bice Osei-Kufuor, popularly referred to as Obuor.

Submissions for other positions were- 1st Vice President: Amandzeba and Kaakyire Kwame Appiah. 2nd Vice President: Bessa Simmons, K.K. Kabobo and C.K. Morisson. General Secretary: Deborah Freeman and Ernest Kwesi Ennin. Treasurer: Oheneba Kissi and Charles Coker Anaman. Organiser: Godfred Mark Hansen and Chizzy Wailer. Only one person, John Victor Owusu, filed to contest for the Wefare Officer position.

The next MUSIGA national congress where the new national executive will be elected has been scheduled for August 16 to August 18 in Tamale, the Northern regional capital. It is expected to attract 130 delegates and 20 observers.

According to the current president, Mrs Diana Hopeson, a committee will be put in place soon to vet the various aspirants before the end of June.

“It will be a panel of very competent persons and those given the green light to contest will have the whole of July and part of August to campaign,” stated Mrs Hopeson who is not competing to be re-elected.

She told Showbiz she promised to occupy the presidency for only one four-year term and she is keeping to the promise she made to herself and colleagues. She was elected into office at the 2007 Sunyani congress.

Though the proposed vetting of aspirants is yet to happen, some of those who have returned their nomination forms are already out of the starting block campaigning, making promises of what they would do if voted into office and levelling a variety of accusations against the current executive.

The last election was characterised by a lot of acrimony and industry watchers are hoping that aspirants would not travel that same road again this time around.
