Today, March 21, is World Home Economics Day. The day was initiated in 1979 by the international Federation for Home Economics (IFHE), an international NGO concerned with the promotion of Home Economics.

The day focuses on the importance of Home Economics to every person as well as the society in general.

Home Economics is a multi-disciplinary subject that is concerned with all aspects of daily living, including human development and relationships, financial and resource management, consumerism, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, and housing.

A statement issued by the Ghana Home Economics Association, an affiliate of the IFHE, and signed by Mrs. Esther Amoah, the President of the Association, gave the theme for the occasion as “Home Economics for Everyday Life Competencies”.

According to the statement, “Many problems of everyday life arose from illiteracy in Home Economics, which is quite common nowadays. These problems will often be experienced as personal failure but they are, in fact, determined by society. A lifelong Home Economics education will provide the competencies that are necessary to deal with requirements of rapidly changing and complex world”.

It added that the lack of Home Economics competencies often results in poverty and indebtedness, waste of resources, health problems and symptoms of stress and exhausting.

According to the statement, lack of knowledge about the relation between health and nutrition can lead to overweight problems, for example, obesity and illness, and added that consumer decisions without ecological and ethnic responsibility cause social and ecological problems all over the world.

“Home Economics education provides essential skills for the successful skills for the successful management of everyday life” it added.

The statement said activities lined up for the celebration include a float, the launching of a partnership project on consumer education between GHEA and Nestle Ghana Limited, and a career guidance seminar for students at the Teacher’s Hall, Accra.
