During World War II the Allied nations referred to themselves as the ‘United Nations”. In 1942 they agreed that they would not make any separate peace agreements with Germany.

It was the Postdam Conference in 1945 that really laid the ground for the foundation of the United Nations to prevent future conflict and also set out procedures for the prosecution of Nazi war criminals.

Twenty seven countries signed the first agreement and in 1945, after the war, the United Nations formally came into existence with an initial membership of 50 countries.

The United Nations (UN ) is led by a powerful Security Council, which can intervene in internatiomal disputes that might lead to conflict.

An example is the conflict in neighbouring Cote d’Ivoire and Libya. The UN soldiers are in Cote d’Ivoire to help solve the conflict. Today the UN is also involved in many economic aid programmes around the world.
