The Greater Accra Regional Security Council has ordered all Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to take immediate steps to improve sanitation in the region.
The council is demanding an action plan for implementation of the directive by Friday.
According to the council, the assemblies have failed to clean the cities resulting in heaps of garbage in various parts of the region.
Some of the waste management companies operating in the region say the district assemblies should not take all the blame.
They say people are simply not behaving in a responsible manner.
Robert Coleman of Zoomlion Limited says there is much indiscipline and this is contributing to the waste management problems.
He told Joy News that no matter the effort put in managing waste, if people continue to litter indiscriminately, the problem will remain unresolved.
