Ghana Elected To AU Anti-Corruption Body

By Timothy Gobah - Daily Graphic

In apparent recognition of its pronounced anti-corruption credentials, Ghana has been elected to serve on the African Union (AU) Advisory Board on fighting corruption.

Eleven African countries were yesterday, elected for a two-year tenure, with Ghana topping with 73 per cent.

The rest are Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi, Algeria, Senegal, Mali, Tanzania, South Africa, Burundi and Nigeria.

The Communications Director at the Presidency, Mr Koku Anyidoho, told the Daily Graphic via telephone from Addis Ababa that the overwhelming election of Ghana was an indication of the confidence reposed in the Mills administration to spearhead the fight against corruption in Ghana, as well as on the African continent.

'As President Mills's integrity continues to fly high the flag of Ghana and restore dignity and pride to our image, Ghana has been overwhelmingly elected to serve on the AU Advisory Board,” he said.

He said the new position would also challenge Ghana more to intensify the drug war, not only in Ghana but also on the African continent as a whole.

Mr Anyidoho noted that the confidence reposed in Ghana would serve as an additional boost to the strong and unbending determination of the President to make corruption a highly unattractive venture in Ghana.

Ghana will be represented on the board by Dr Tony Aidoo.
