Koforidua, Dec. 30, GNA - The District Assembly and Unit Committee elections scheduled to take place in the Eastern Region on Thursday, December 30, 2010 have been postponed again.

The postponement had become necessary due to the inability of the Electoral Commission (EC) to receive the election materials as at last night, Wednesday, December 29.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, at Koforidua, the Eastern Regional Electoral Officer, Mr Paul Boateng said his outfit was expecting the election materials from Accra but as at last night the region had not received materials for 12 districts.

He said they later had information from Headquarters that the ballot papers for the rest of the districts had been sent and were on their way to the region.

He said the region had not received any ballot papers for the Unit Committee Elections and since the two elections were supposed to take place simultaneously, they could not conduct the elections.

Mr Boateng said the printers of the Electoral Commission had promised to deliver the ballot papers for the unit committee elections by Thursday, December 30, 2910 and hopefully the elections could come off on Friday, December 31, 2010.

He described the situation as unfortunate and apologized to all the aspirants and other stakeholders for any inconveniences that might have caused.

At the time of the visit, all the district electoral officers in the region had arrived at the regional office to collect the election materials to their various destinations.

This is the second time that the District Assembly elections, which was originally schedule for Tuesday, December 28, 2010 is being postponed due to delay in the delivery of ballot papers for the elections.
