Akwamu Traditional Council Warns Govt
13.01.2003 LISTEN

The Akwamu traditional council has warned government against the use of Juapong as capital of a proposed new district- West Tongu. The new district will be created from the North Tongu district which stretches from Adidome near Sogakope to the border with the Eastern region. Juapong, considered a part of the Volta Region is also been claimed by the people of Akwamu in the Eastern region. The century old dispute over ownership of the town is currently before court. The Twafohene of the Akwamu traditional area, Nana Okunini Dwamena IV says they have heard of government’s plan to name Juapong as capital of West Tongu, a move that will be resisted. He also reminded government that the ownership of the town is before court. Speaking to Joy FM about the concerns of the Akwamu people, deputy minister for local government and rural development Captain Nkrabea Effah-Darteh says government would not impose its decision on any community. Meanwhile, information available to Joy FM say government is going ahead with its plans to name Akuse as the capital for the newly created Dangbe central district of the Greater Accra region. This like situations elsewhere would be resisted. Joy FM gathers that Manya Krobo in the Eastern region and Osudoku in the Greater Accra region are locked up in a dispute over the ownership of Akuse.
