Tamale, Sept. 24, GNA - The Ghana Bar Association (GBA), on Thursday, made a donation of GH¢2,000 to the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH) for the upkeep of the victims of the accident which occurred in Tamale on Saturday 19th September, 2010, leading to the death of 21 people on the spot, and several others injured.

Six of the injured later died while on admission at the hospital, bringing to 27, the number of people who have so far died from that accident. About 32 of those hospitalised have been treated and discharged, and 40 are still on admission.

Mr Peter Zwennes, National Secretary of the GBA, made the donation on behalf of the Association and called on the appropriate state agencies to take urgent steps to reduce the spate of road accidents in the country.

He also expressed condolence to the bereaved families and appealed to the general public and corporate bodies to assist the victims.

The Administrative Director of the TTH, Mr Marcellus K. Welber, thanked the GBA for their donation and assured them that their donation would be put to good use.

He disclosed that five of the victims on admission who needed treatment for multiple fractures and head injuries, were airlifted to the Korle Bu hospital on Thursday.

Mr Welber said the hospital had spent about GH¢40,000 on the medical upkeep of the victims and appealed to the Government and the general public to come to the aid of the hospital to defray the debts.

It would be recalled that 21 persons died in the accident which occurred at Zagyire near the Kamina Barracks in Tamale, when a Leyland cargo truck with registration number NR1259W tried to overtake a tipper truck.

The Minister of Transport, Mr Mike Hammah, also paid a visit to the accident victims last Monday and donated GH¢ 10,000 on behalf of the Government.
