Police must deal decisively with offenders

There has been reported firing of gunshots and tear gas, with injury to some innocent people and political leaders, with both the NDC and NPP trading in accusations and counter accusations.

The Chronicle finds the development rather unfortunate, especially, when the country had gone to the polls barely two years ago to elect a president and parliamentarians, which was applauded internationally.

It is an undeniable fact that the Atiwa Constituency is the stronghold of the NPP and, therefore, it will be no news if they win, which is what has actually happened.

To The Chronicle, the desire by both political parties to craft campaign messages that one of the parties is losing popularity, while the other was winning the heart of Ghanaians, was what motivated them to take the election to the level we witnessed yesterday.

As we have always maintained in this column, Ghana has been practising her democracy for the past 18 years, during which several elections have been held.

This means that the country has come to appreciate what elections mean, therefore, to turn a bye-election into a do or die affair is very unfortunate, and must be condemned by all lovers of democracy.

This country does not belong to the NDC or NPP for them to unleash a reign of terror on the good people of this country, in the name of elections.

It is the hope of The Chronicle that the police will be politically neutral in these reported incidents, and deal decisively with all those who have been arrested in connection with violence.

This is the only way the country can drum home the message that it abhors violence in all facets of the country, including political ones.
