Accra, June 11, GNA - The Vodafone Ghana Foundation said on Friday it was impressed by the huge number of applications it was receiving from people to participate in the World of Difference (WoD) project.

The project which aims at changing the face of corporate philanthropy in Ghana is offering individuals the opportunity to make the impact they have always wanted to make through charity work.

Launched at the "020 Live Concert" about three weeks ago, the project provides a unique opportunity for Ghanaian professionals and non-professionals alike to spend working time with their favourite charity and make a difference in the lives of the underprivileged in the society.

Speaking to journalists in Accra, Afua Amankwa Sarkodie of the Vodafone Ghana Foundation described applications received so far as remarkable, saying "we are receiving responses from across a variety of professionals namely nurses, doctors, accountants, technicians, graduates as well as students who have expressed interest in helping to redefine the scope and meaning of volunteerism in Ghana."

She said the Foundation was excited about the high level of interest shown by professionals and urged others to take advantage of the programme to make a world of difference in the lives of people who were less privileged.

"This is evident in the large turnout of applicants for the WoD programme in the 33 Vodafone Retail Shops across the country, as well as the online applications received so far."

Ms Sarkodie said the project was a new and entirely different way to go about social responsibility and corporate charity, and "goes beyond the act of just donating money to charities.

"It offers Ghanaians the opportunity to donate their time and skills to a charity they have a passion for. Vodafone's World of Difference, managed by the Vodafone Ghana Foundation, enables individuals to work for a charity and be paid for taking time off their regular schedules and lending support to any charity of their choice."

It also helps people to attain more self-confidence so that they are further encouraged to socialise and remove the barriers that prevent them from participating fully in society.
