Chief provides community with KVIP

THE ADOTEIMAN community in the Ga East Municipal Assembly has been provided with a twelve-seater 'Kumasi Ventilated Improved Pit' (KVIP) toilet to help improve the environmental conditions of the area.

According to Alhaji Djanie Mustapha Nii Kotei II, Chief of the area, he felt the need to give back to his community, thus, he used savings from the sale of land to construct the facility at the cost of two thousand and five hundred Ghana Cedis (2,500).

He said the facility, which was started in February last year and completed in December of the same year, was necessary to provide a place of convenience for his subjects and visitors, as well as passers-by.

He explained that this would avert the threat of an outbreak of diseases through defecation in surrounding bushes, hence the building of the project.

At the commissioning of the facility in the community, last Monday, Nii Kotei II was hopeful that it would generate enough funds from the community to embark on other important projects.

The Member of Parliament for the Abokobi Madina Constituency, Alhaji Amadu Sorogho commended the initiative of the Chief, saying, “Most of the time, people call on MPs to demand many things from them for their communities, but for the first time, I have been called to commission a facility that I knew nothing about.”

He noted that it was the duty of the Assemblyman, Member of Parliament, District Chief Executive and Municipal Chief Executive to have embarked on such a project, but “a chief has thought of his people and provided a public place of convenience for them, for which he will always be remembered.”

He admonished community members who would utilize the facility to keep it clean to ensure easy maintenance, and promised to provide two street lights for the premises while assuring the people that other areas in the community that needed street lights would also be provided within the next two months.

The former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga East Municipal Assembly, Mr. Kwao Sacker, for his part commended the chief for his inventiveness, saying, not all leaders venture into public service, especially in the area of sanitation.

According to him, “some leaders would prefer to ride in expensive cars than to spend money on fruitful projects”, stressing that “I am happy that he has taken a positive action by providing the basic needs of his people.”

However, he urged the chief to ensure effective documentation of land in the community and make same available to the assembly so that other areas needed for social facilities would be mapped out and protected.

He lamented that often, lands needed for communal development were sold to individuals or corporate organizations only for the assemblies to purchase them from such persons in order to provide social amenities for communities.
