Government urged to intensify literacy skills in schools

Winneba, Dec 23, GNA - The Executive Director of the Centre for Literacy Empowerment, a non-governmental organization, Mr. Abudulai Jakalia, has appealed to the Ministry of Education to put certain mechanisms in place to ensure that literacy skills are taught at all levels of education in the country.

He said "literacy is no longer about reading and writing but one's ability to be abreast with the multiple media facility in the global economy."

Mr Jakalia, who is also a senior lecturer in the English Department of the University of Education , Winneba, was speaking in an interview with the GNA in Winneba.

He said as a developing country, Ghana must take a cue from developed countries where literacy skills played a pivotal role in their developmental drive.

Mr. Jakalia said it was important for each family to own a so that children would be in tune with technology.
