Japekrom (B/A) Dec. 22, GNA - The Jaman South District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has placed a ban on the possession and use of bush meat to prevent the occurrence of bushfires during the harmattan season.
Briefing the GNA at Japekrom, Mr. Peter Aduya, district fire officer, said the decision taken jointly by the Ghana National Fire Service and the Assembly was a timely intervention to salvage the District's dwindling vegetative cover.
Mr. Aduya indicated that security personnel and the district administration were determined to stamp out bushfires, and that stringent measures had been put in place to deal drastically with anyone who was caught committing a fire offence.
He entreated the people to refrain from acts that could lead to the incidence of bushfire and cautioned hunters and smokers to be wary of their activities.
Mr. Aduya urged farmers to engage fire volunteers to help in the process of clearing or burning their plots for farming.
The ban on bush meat is a step in the right direction as it will help curb if not totally eliminate bushfires, the district fire officer added.
Mr. Aduya explained that the ban would also help prevent a depletion in the stock of wildlife as most of the animals were breeding their young offspring, and warned food vendors to adhere to the ban.
