
Government is to establish 230 Community Information Centres across the country to promote community-based ICT applications for accelerated growth and development. Already, 120 of them have been established.
The Minister of Communications, Haruna Iddrisu disclosed this in a speech at the opening of a sensitization workshop for 55 selected Municipal, Metropolitan and District Chief Executives across the country in Kumasi.
The Chief Executives are being educated on the new Community Information Centres, ICT, Project being facilitated by the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communication, GIFEC.
Mr. Iddrisu noted that the establishment of the ICT to open up the rural areas is part of measures to address rural poverty through creation of wealth.
He said Ghana cannot attain the middle level income status as contained in the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy.
The Chief Administrator of GIFEC, Kofi Ator said the new concept of community Information Project is to connect 50 schools to the internet, while 140 technical schools are also to be provided with computers and connected to the internet.
The Technical and Youth Training Centres established in each of the 10 regions are also to be provided with computers and connected to the internet.
