Tamale, Dec. 16, GNA - Alhaji Abdulai Harruna Friday, Tamale Metropolitan Chief Executive, has appealed to women to improve upon their educational status to enable them know and defend their rights against atrocities committed against them.
He said it was only when women knew their rights and participated in decision making that they could challenge decisions that were not in their favour.
Alhaji Friday said this at the Northern Regional launch of the "16 days of activism against gender-based violence", in Tamale on Tuesday.
It was on the theme: "Commit, act, demand; we can end violence against women".
Alhaji Friday attributed most cases of domestic violence against women to ignorance and stressed the need for them to be educated on the laws that protect them.
Mr. Patrick Zakari-Saa, the Regional Director of the Department of Women, said rape and other forms of violence against women was on the rise and committed with impunity in the region.
