The Dean of the School of Agriculture of the University of Ghana, Legon, Professor Kwame Offei has underscored the need for African countries to collectively explore investment options in Agricultural technology to enhance production.
This he believes can contribute to the attainment of the millennium development goal. One, which is to eradicate extreme hunger and poverty.
Professor Offei was speaking at the opening of a workshop geared at addressing the concerns of farmers in Accra. He said research has shown that over one hundred million people are currently living in extreme poverty.
He said food insecurity and high food prices pose a threat to prosperity and security in many developing countries. Professor Offei expressed worry that Agricultural output per person in Africa has fallen in recent years.
He therefore called on African leaders to implement domestic policies that will provide incentives for agricultural productivity and reduce tax rates in the sector. Participants at the workshop were drawn from Guinea, Benin, Ghana, Netherlands and Portugal.
