His Grace, Most Rev. Dr Peter Kwasi Sarpong, Catholic Archbishop Emeritus of Kumasi has celebrated the 50th anniversary of his priestly life during which the only three parishes in the Kumasi metropolis namely St. Peter's Cathedral, St Theresa and Immaculate heart of Virgin Mary, located at Roman Hill, Asawase, South Suntreso, respectively increased to 30 parishes.
At a thanksgiving service held in Kumasi, Most Rev. Anthony Adanutey of Keta Krachi diocese described Bishop Sarpong as a servant of servants not only as a shepherd of God's flock but a development oriented man who has contributed immensely in his effort at helping in nation building during the past 50th years.
He said as a priest, His Grace, Most Rev. Kwasi Sarpong's contribution to the growth of the church in Kumasi in particular and Ghana in general which is well documented may sound just superfluous if one attempts to recount them.
He said Bishop Sarpong embarked on several projects to help in socio-economic, educational, health and religious sectors of the country. According to Keta diocesan Bishop, the Archbishop Emeritus founded eight secondary schools, one technical school, six vocational schools, one hospital, one minor seminary, one novitiate, seven rural health clinics, and four village agricultural schools and encouraged the establishment of cooperative credit unions everywhere in his diocese.
Bishop Sarpong also planned and partially implemented the training of skilled personnel, particularly for rural development and youth leadership both in and outside Ghana.
He also has a program for orphans and refugees and has also established a special program for street children besides playing host to Pope John Paul II in May 1990.
Bishop Adanutey cautioned Pastors and priests should trust in the Lord and o help their people spiritually, morally and physically and to put their trust in the Lord.
