Economic empowerment achieves independence for Bongo-Soe women

THE CONTINUOUS marginalisation of women in the domestic setting, as mere caretakers of the offspring and handlers of the daily household chores, especially their tightly defined role to the kitchen, might be receiving a different and improved dimension in the Bongo-Soe community in the Bongo district.

Women in the area hold 50% shares in decision-making, whilst the hitherto supreme landlords, the men, remind their wives of community association meeting schedules.

These revelations came to bear when the women of Bongo issued a statement to express their contentment with the projects of World Vision Ghana in the district.

The women in the area have benefited from Shea butter extraction equipment, with which they can now produce ten tonnes of Shea butter for sale.

Through the equipment, the women have acquired income to electrify the area.

The women say because they are economically empowered now, their husbands and other members of the society accord them the recognition that their colleagues just can't find.

According to a spokesperson for the women, Mrs. Gifty Akugri Atia, migrating to the south had become alien in their community.
