Law & Order & The President!

Law & Order & The President!

My own auntie, the redoubtable Ama Benyiwa Doe, must have come into some fantastic wins at the lottery in recent times. It is amazing the way and manner that she is putting up high-rise mansions and edifices all over the place! All her activities point to a person who is sure that she has great financial prospects for the near future, and therefore she can splurge around to her heart's content!

I mean, if you live in this economy these days, then you obviously know that it is not easy to get bread to eat, not to speak of butter. But it seems that for the likes of my auntie Ama, they cannot only buy bread and butter, they can also fry many eggs to go along with the thick and large cups of sweet Milo drink that she is enjoying. Hmm, time changes! There was a time in the history of some people when they could not afford to buy petrol for their small sedans. Today, just ten months into political office, they are contemplating building huge mansions! Eei, life!

Sincerely speaking, I wonder whether our President, John Evans Atta mills, has time to listen to or read the newspapers and to listen to radio to find out what is going on around him, because, my friends, things are not good. The chop chop is too much! As Dr. Assem Foforo said, some people are eating left, right and centre, but some people can't even get through the gate and into the walls to observe the party!

Talking about the President keeping attention to the things that are going on around him, I wonder if he hears some of the things that are happening in other areas, particularly with regard to law and order.

My fellow Ghanaians, a leader who does not respect law and order is a dangerous leader. It seems that he would allow any type of abuse to be perpetrated against his fellow citizens, because he lacks the basic cognitive abilities to realize that what is being done is wrong and unlawful!

Since President Atta Mills came to power, there have been a lot of legal abuses against the rights of many Ghanaians. I can speak about the treatment of the likes of Stephen Asamoah Boateng and his family, the abuse of the rights of Mr. Akwasi Osei Agyei, and many others. I can speak of the stripping naked of two men in Bawku, the seizure of President Kufuor's entitlements, the illegal seizure of toilets, the school-feeding issue, the dismissal of many public servants, and many, many more! Indeed, the abuses of the rights of Ghanaians under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government led by President Atta Mills are becoming legion, but the latest such abuse, for me, is shocking beyond belief!

It has been reported that the Bank of Ghana has directed that the assets of Kosmos Energy be frozen, and in that wise, some banks operating in our country have complied! When I heard the allegations, I was so shocked that I could not believe it, until I confirmed it through my private sources.

Apparently, the orders to freeze the assets had issued from the Serious Fraud Office to the Bank of Ghana, which then transferred the orders to the affected accounts in the banks involved, thus freezing the accounts.

For a nation that is supposed to be democratic and lawful, with a President who is a law professor presiding, some of these things lead me irrevocably to the conclusion that things are really going wrong.

My brothers and sisters, we do not live in a jungle. We live in constitutional and democratic Ghana, where the law is supposed to reign supreme. As we speak, it is a known fact that government has been trying to negotiate with Kosmos to buy its interests in the Tano oilfields. Whilst these negotiations are going on, the same government is also employing all types of underhand tactics, using the police, the BNI and the SFO, and now they have the temerity to drag in our respected central bank!

As a matter of urgency, I call on Professor Atta Mills and his government to take immediate and irrevocable actions to defreeze the assets f Kosmos Energy and to stop behaving as if his government is a bull in a china shop! Ghana is not a paradise, but it is certainly not the lawless country that Mills and co are working so hard to create!

Once again, I must call on President Atta Mills to put an immediate stop to all the unlawful acts taking place under his watch. It is getting too much, and they are getting out of hand! If indeed he is a law professor, then he should behave as such! For now, I am unconvinced about the legitimacy of his pretensions to lawfulness!
