The war of words, insults and curses between Bishop Daniel Obinim of the International God's Way Church at Bonsore, Kumasi and Rev. Dr Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom, has thankfully subsided perhaps, due to the criticisms of the general public, especially the media.
What has worried most members of the public is the fact that the two are men of God with large following and supposed to live exemplary lives for their followers to emulate.
Quarrel
The quarrel by the two was, therefore, in the estimation of some well-meaning members of society, uncalled for, could have been handled more maturely and in the Christian way.
But what caused the problem between the two? According to reports in the media and what Musa, the traditional priest in the centre of the quarrel said on Rev. Yiadom's TV programme on Metro TV, both men of God claimed to have exorcised Musa of his demonic powers.
According to Musa as captured on Metro TV, “I was sleeping with my wife in the church premises, when a gentleman woke me up around 4a.m, and informed me that he had been sent by Bishop Obinim”.
He continued that because he wanted to know their intention he followed them to Obinim's church, where he “told me to lie against Rev. Dr Ebenezer Adarkwa Yiadom (Prophet No.1) of the Ebenezer Miracle Worship Centre that the prophet could not exorcise the demons and that I was still possessed”.
Musa went on to say that he was promised GH¢2,000 In addition to which he would be flown to Accra with his family to be taken care of by Obinim if he told the world that it was Obinim who had exorcised him.
He said though he was astonished and did not know why another man of God would want to tarnish the image of a colleague, he went ahead, picked a khaki shorts and an idol which had been designed with some dirty rags from home and went to Obinim's Church.
There, Obinim proclaimed that Ebenezer was not a real man of God and that he had a man from Ebenezer's camp who would testify to that.
The assertion, according to Musa, was the reason why the two men of God shed their pious garments and descended into the gutter to hurl insults at each other.
Unfortunately we could not get anybody from the Ghana Pentecostal Council to speak to on the issue. However, we found out that both churches led by the two men of God did not belong to the Ghana Pentecostal Council.
Christian Council
In a chat with Rev. Dr Fred Degbe, General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana on the attitude of the two men of God, he described their behaviour as unfortunate and unacceptable.
While he did not doubt their calling or otherwise by God, the two should have shown more maturity in dealing with each other.
“The Bible has clear guidelines as to how people should resolve conflicts. They could have called other people and tried to resolve the issue amicably”.
Rev. Dr Degbe pointed out that the Lord Jesus Christ himself faced persecution but only asked that his persecutors should be forgiven and said if the two men of God were followers of Jesus Christ, then they should emulate his good works.
Warning
He also drew attention to the biblical quotation that if anyone led the children of God astray, they might as well put a milestone around their necks and drown. “They must watch it if they really say they are following Christ,' he cxautioned.
At a press conference organised by the International Council of Clergy (ICC), an association of independent ministers and churches on September 16, the members expressed their displeasure at the display of what they called “arrogance and disrespect by members of the clergy.'
They cited the media feud between the two and described it as “worrying”.
The Presiding Archbishop of the ICC, Archbishop Dr George Siezer Ofori-Atta, who addressed the press conference stressed, “It is worrying to hear about the trading of insults on the airwaves and sending of threatening text messages by two well-known ministers of God”.
He explained, “the purpose of the church is to salvage society from its moral decadence, save souls and prepare them to inherit the glorious future kingdom hereafter”, he added. Continued
